Interview with Jim Lutes

ARTIST INTERVIEW | Jim Lutes: Solo, No Solo

Description

On the occasion of Jim Lutes's online exhibition, Solo, No Solo, the artist joins us for an exclusive video interview in his Chicago studio. Lutes discusses the evolution of his practice, from his early years in Seattle studying with artist Gaylen Hansen to his visual experimentation while a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Throughout it all, Lutes has eschewed categorization, instead opting to maintain a material-oriented, unhurried, and organic painting practice.

As the artist explains, “I try to create relationships in the paintings that are odd enough to not have a good explanation. And usually, if you put enough things together that don’t have a good explanation, then people will create their own. That is what I am trying most to do.”
